The tradition of forcing your 18-year-old into their nicest clothing at a neutral, wooded location, holding something that might speak to their unique personality during their high school days, is not a new one. I used to look at the photo of my mom in a huge wicker chair with a gaussian blur and uniquely earth toned 70’s palate and dream of what my own senior photos might look like someday.
Spoiler: here it is!

Trends in senior portrait photography have changed over the years. The traditional posed studio shots and formal outfits are making way for a more natural, individualized portrait that shares something about the graduate, their passions, and their future dreams.

Senior photos today include pets, friends, instruments, books, extracurricular activities, whatever you can dream up, your senior can include in their photos! While schools may have specific requirements for yearbook photos, the sky is the limit for any photos that you may want to include in your seniors graduation announcements, at their party, or to hang on the wall as a reminder of their final year of high school.

Give your senior a chance to create their own look for their photos. Don’t stress about having them dress up fancy, these photos should reflect who they are, not some kid they’ve never met! Is your child an aspiring photographer? Give them a camera to play with, a writer? show them with their favorite journal on next to their computer. Opt for a simple, natural background, or even the local cemetery for a beautiful, gothic inspired photoshoot. There is no wrong way to do a senior photo, as long as your child is reflected as they are, in a way that celebrates the bright future ahead!
